Vineyard Workers
The light and landscape of Long Island, the eastern part of NY, has inspired artists for generations, making a great contribution to the heritage of American Art. In "The Vineyard Workers" series Lynn takes her place in this tradition.
The subject is timely. Vineyards are a relatively new additi on to the long history of agriculture here. As are the faces of the workers. We watch, as the figures prune the vines, walk the rows, harvest the fruit. But looking more closely, we catch a glimpse of the rich spiritual life of the artist as well.
Viewed as a whole, the paintings present a cohesive, harmonious body of work for the Lynn. The workers themselves dominate the canvas in many of the paintings. Whether a single figure or a group, the artist demonstrates her skill at rendering the human form. Bold blocks of color, laid down with confident brush strokes create fluid, lively figures in action. They are sensitive but not at all fussy.
Lynn also skillfully uses color to portray the light and atmosphere so specific to this part of the world. We feel the sun in these paintings. It is reflected in a workers shirt, dancing on a leaf and saturating the fields. It is this light, bouncing off the waters of the surrounding sea, that has captured the imagination of so many American painters through the years, that we find in
the paintings of "The Vineyard Workers".
