Enduring Stars and Stripes
A powerful subject for the artist, the American Flag is defined beautifully in many ways.
In these paintings Lynn uses mixed media -- thickly applied paint, objects and text -- to present a variety of ideas through this iconic image. Each flag is unique, with a distinct personality. The format c hanges. Some are small and gemlike, others larger than life, but all convey the values that we hold so dear.
In "Starfish Flag" the artist depicts the flag on it's own. Layers of color are applied in bold, expressive brush strokes, pushing the image to it's boundaries. It is strong, confident and daring. But the overall effect is subtle and reassuring. The painting invites you to stop and look beyond the immediate surface. Almost like a meditation, it asks us to contemplate the enduring qualities that the Flag represents.
The artist uses a different approach in "Liberty". The Flag is there, but this time as a backdrop. This time it is not the execution of the painting, but the image that makes the point.
Employing the use of perspective, the artist commands us to look up. Be brave. Have faith.
